February 2024

President's Report

Hello everyone,

Welcome to our first newsletter in 2024. Due to marine weather the Committee decided to postpone the February competition for one week, the first time in 30 years! The decision wasn’t made lightly, however the safety factor was the number one priority and the Committee members felt this was the best option for everyone.

A big thank you goes to our February sponsors; Bell and Graham Solicitors, Sportsworld, Begovich Builders, Matamata Butchery, Top Cru, Stihl Shop, Phil Stevens Racing, Grant and Stef Atkinson’s Whitehall Shoeing. There was a great array of prizes due to the generous sponsorship. On the fishing scene Stef Atkinson won the Heaviest Game Fish with her 12.6kg Mahimahi, a great fish. This was also a new club record so very exciting.

On the Marlin scene Chris and Josh Bungard headed out to Raglan and caught a lovely stripey within 6 minutes of having their lures in! Unfortunately it was just under 90kg. There was also some nice fish weighed in from the Firth of Thames winning some pretty cool prizes.

The next comp is coming up quickly and it is a 3-day competition, Friday 1st March, Saturday, and Sunday. The Friday is open to all fishers not just game fishing. This is our big fish competition. Longtime sponsors of this event are Matamata Marine, King Electrical, Challenge Matamata, Matamata Veterinary Services Farm, and Plumbco. And we have the kids section once again sponsored by Waharoa Transport. Plus we welcome new March sponsors Small Steps Early Learning Centre.

Happy fishing everybody and let’s hope we see a Marlin weighed in at our next comp.

Thanks all,

 Phi
